Vernon emerged to Ohio State coaches during the second session of June 2003’s Senior Advanced Camp, where he demonstrated skills impressive enough to gain an offer. Vernon was a versatile player in high school as he won All City and All State honors on the offensive line and had 75 tackles and six sacks as a defensive end and linebacker during his senior season. Gholston’s physical stature and athleticism are very impressive, and he has the physical tools to develop into the next big-time speed rusher for Ohio State. He chose the Buckeyes over Michigan, Michigan State, and others.
