Scott Merchant – Assistant Coach
Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley High School
Scott Merchant graduated from Brother Rice HS, where he was a three-year varsity letter winner and a captain his senior year. He went on to Albion College, where he played four years of football for the Britons, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. Scott has also earned a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Michigan State University and a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the University of Detroit Mercy.
Scott is going into his 22nd year of coaching this fall. He served five years as an Assistant Coach at Albion College, before spending nine years as the Head Coach at University of Detroit Jesuit High School. After two years as an Assistant Coach at Brother Rice High School, Scott was hired as the Head Coach at Chippewa Valley High School, where he currently works as a School Counselor. This will be his sixth season at Chippewa Valley.
During his time at Chippewa Valley, his teams have won multiple Macomb Area Conference sportsmanship awards, Academic All-State accolades, the Steve Spicer Award for community service, and raised $15,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Last year the Big Reds finished with a 9-2 record, their most wins in a single season since 2003.
Scott is married to Amy, and is blessed with two children: Emma (10) and Will (5). Coach Merchant said, “It is truly an honor and a privilege to be selected by my peers to coach in the inaugural Border Classic and to represent the State of Michigan on the football field. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.”
