Sam is the son of Paul and Brenda Rathbun. He has one brother, Ben, who is a junior at Michigan State University.
Sam started playing football when he was in third grade. As a junior Sam started at center for a 5-5 Haslett Vikings varsity team that lost in the first round of the playoffs. Sam earned All Conference Honors as an offensive lineman. Sam returned for his senior year as the starting center and also a captain. The Vikings went 4-5 and missed the playoffs. However Sam was named to the Lansing State Journal Dream team, and was also All State Honorable Mention.
Sam has also played hockey “since birth.” After playing travel hockey all of his life, Sam decided to play for the Eastside Stars, his high school team during his sophomore year. As a junior, the Stars lost in the Regional final to the eventual state champion Brighton Bulldogs. As a senior, Sam led his team to the league championship with a 13-1 record and Sam also led the team in overall points and assists. Sam was named First-Team All-Conference.
Sam thanked his family “for their unconditional support throughout his athletic career. He also thanked his football and hockey coaches “for pushing me to be the athlete I am today.” He gave a “special thank you to Jeff Bott for being a great offensive line coach and a great mentor.”
