Matt is the son of Don and Susan. He has two older sisters, Jessica and Cathy.
Matt first started playing football for the Dearborn Heights Raiders at the age of eight. He continued playing high school football for the Dearborn Heights Crestwood Chargers, where he started on the JV team, but was moved up to varsity to play on the offensive line before the end of the season. Matt switched schools and became a Livonia Stevenson Spartan, after his ninth grade season. Matt went on to become a three-year starting varsity player. He played on the defensive line for his sophomore and junior years. It was during his senior year that Matt was asked to play both offensive and defensive tackle for the Spartans. “Matt’s drive and determination are evident in all aspects of his life, and his exceptional leadership skills on and off the field” led to his being selected as one of the Spartans’ team captains in his senior year.
Matt finished his high school career winning numerous awards including: KLAA All Conference player, the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News Division 1 and 2 All State Football Team, First Team All Metro West, and the Livonia Observer All Area First Team.
Matt thanked all the people “who have influenced me in my life.” He thanked Coach Glen Free and Coach Jim Carlisle “for all their support, guidance and help throughout the years.” He thanked his Stevenson coaches, Coach Fielder, Coach Gabel, Coach Mac, and Coach Shaw “for believing in me and guiding me to become successful.” Furthermore, Matt gave a special thanks to his Spartan football brothers, “for always being there for me.” Lastly, Matt thanked his family “for standing by me, supporting me at my games, and for their unconditional love.”
