Josh was a three year starter for the Portage Northern Huskies where he played numerous positions including right tackle, center, defensive tackle and nose guard. All three years Josh was a two-way player for the Huskies. In his senior year, Josh was named one of three team captains. Determination and a year-round commitment to total body conditioning paid off. As a strong player throughout his three year varsity career, Josh earned numerous team awards including the coveted Huskie Award (for team spirit) and the Hog Award for lineman achievements. Regarded as a “player to watch,” the Kalamazoo Gazette named Josh as a Prep-Star his junior year.
Josh said that one of his best memories is during his junior year when the Portage Northern Huskies advanced to the State Play-off Game in 2005. “I enjoyed the opportunity for us as a team to be rewarded for our season of hard work and determination,” As a freshman, Josh had the opportunity to move to the varsity team and play with his senior-class brother in the State Play-off Game; Josh was the only freshman to receive this honor.
Since his freshmen year, Josh has been a yearly three varsity sport athlete earning ten varsity letters at Portage Northern. Josh was a varsity wrestler for three years. In track he has earned the most team points as a thrower. In his freshman year, Josh lettered in hockey.
Football is a passion in Josh’s household. Josh thanked his older brother, Jacob for his advice and guidance. Jacob is an All Conference MIAA right tackle at Hope College. Josh’s father and two grandfathers were also All Conference football players at Hope College. His younger brother also plays football.
