Joe was a two-year starter on the varsity football team. He started at offensive guard and at defensive end. He was named captain his senior year. During his junior year, he was given the Trench Award for being the all-around best in the trenches. He was also pulled up to the junior varsity team as a freshman. Joe started playing football as a third grader. In his eighth grade year he was coached by his older brother Tim.
As a freshman and sophomore, Joe played baseball. He was a catcher and played first base. In his junior and senior years he earned two varsity letters as a shot putter for the track team.
Joe thanked his parents and family, “for all the support and encouragement over the years,” his grandfather, Larry Bielat, “for giving me the inspiration to play this great game of football and my brother for passing on all of his knowledge, to his not-solittle brother. A special thanks to Coach Dave Woodcock, for helping me sharpen my defensive skills. Lastly, I would like to thank all of my friends for all the great football memories.”
