Tyler is the son of Jeff and Tracy Steele. He has four brothers, Dawson Steele (14), Cayden Kerher (6), Jacksen Steele (6), and Brody Steele (1). In addition, Tyler has one sister, Reese Kerher (7).
Tyler began playing football in little league for the Garden City Youth Athletic Association. After his freshman year in high school, Tyler was brought up to the varsity level and started at quarterback for three years, during which he also earned Scholar-Athlete Honors. Tyler served as team captain his junior and senior years. After his senior year, Tyler was named to the 2011 Western Wayne Athletic Conference All League Team, 2011 honorable mention to the Observer All Area Football Team, and was an honorable mention to the 2011 Detroit Free Press All Metro West Football Team. In addition, Tyler earned honorable mention to the WWAC All League Team, as a sophomore and as a junior. In 2011, Tyler set the school single season record for passing yards (1159) while leading his team to the playoffs for the third time in school history. Tyler also holds the school record for overall career passing yards (3225). In addition, Tyler was selected as the Garden City Football Team MVP in 2009 and 2011. The highlight of these honors was being selected to play in the MHSFCA East-West All Star Game. Tyler is the second football player in the history of Garden City High School to be selected to play in this game.
Tyler was also a three-year varsity starter in baseball and basketball, where he earned the Scholar-Athlete Honors in these sports as well.
Tyler said, “Many people have positively impacted my life. The two biggest people are my mother and father. I know that no matter how tough things get, that when I look up in the stands that they will be there cheering me on. Coach Murray has impacted my life tremendously, as he has shown me how to be a leader both on and off the field. He will do whatever he can to make you come first, even if he is having a bad day. I know that he will always be there for me through whatever adversity that I may have, and he means a lot to me.”
