Mike is the son of Fred and Sharon O’Brien. He has an older brother, Matt (20), who attends The University of Michigan.
Mike started playing football in the fifth grade. He has grown up with and played with the same teammates for the past eight years. As a freshman he was pulled up to varsity when the JV program was suspended for the last two games of the season. He saw significant playing time. The following year he started on varsity as an outside linebacker and was a backup tight end as well as a defensive end. His junior and senior seasons he started both ways as a linebacker and tight end, he was also in several special team packages. Mike helped lead his school to their first playoff win since 2002 and a 9-2 record.
Mike was a three sport athlete and will leave Glen Lake with 12 varsity letters. He was a three-time first team all conference selection in basketball and golf. For his senior season of basketball, he was selected as a first team all stater and captain of the Traverse City Record Eagle Dream Team. Mike also was an activity member in student government, the National Honors Society and various other volunteer programs in the Glen Lake area.
Mike thanked his parents for their “unconditional love and support for me.” He also thanked his coaches, “especially Jerry Angers, who believed in me and pushed me to be my best.” He thanked his teammates and his community for, “all the support and great memories over the past four years.”
